Buyer’s Guide 12 — Buying Online: From Listing to Physical Stone

When buying online, you are not buying only a picture. You must connect (1) the listing, (2) the official laboratory record, (3) the physical stone, (4) the invoice, and (5) delivery/return. If one link does not match the others, the whole process deserves a pause.

Red flags

• only stock images for a supposedly unique stone;
• the seller refuses to provide the report number;
• report measurements and listing measurements differ;
• the return policy is vague or changes after payment;
• payment is requested through an unusual channel with weak protection;
• shipping lacks tracking or insurance appropriate to the value;
• the seller asks you to resize or customize before you have had a chance to inspect the stone.

Purchase checklist

• The seller is verifiable.
• The official report record matches the listing.
• I know the total landed cost.
• I read the return policy before payment.
• I know who bears shipping risk and how the parcel is insured.
• My inspection plan fits inside the return window.
• I do not authorize custom work or resizing until I understand the effect on return eligibility and terms.

Buyer’s Guide 13 — Engagement Ring and Custom Order: A Controlled Workflow

An engagement ring or custom piece is a project that brings together the stone, construction, metal, aesthetics, size, deadline, and future service. The costliest mistakes often occur when a design is approved before the functional constraints are clear.

Red flags

• CAD begins before final center-stone dimensions are known;
• the seller says “anything can be resized later” without discussing construction;
• points on a fancy shape are not adequately protected;
• there is no written design brief;
• approvals exist only in conversation;
• return/remake rules are undefined before irreversible production.

Purchase checklist

• The stone and design brief are final before manufacture.
• The setting matches the stone geometry and lifestyle.
• Metal/alloy was chosen with future service in mind.
• I know the final profile, dimensions, and tolerances.
• Approval gates are defined.
• Return/remake and warranty terms are in writing.

A render is not a perfect prediction of the finished object. Final QC should check both functional safety and conformity with the approved specification.

Check Your Understanding

• When does the return window actually start and end?
• Who bears loss/damage risk during outbound and return shipping, and what insurance actually applies?
• Which action after receipt could reduce or eliminate return eligibility?
• Was the final center stone approved before final CAD and production?
• What tolerances and approval milestones govern the project?
• What happens if the delivered piece does not conform to the approved brief?
