Treatments: What Changes and What Must Be Disclosed

Keep six questions separate:

material → origin → treatment → grade → stability/care → disclosure.

Cutting, ordinary cleaning, setting, and an identification laser inscription are not by themselves gemological treatments. Treatment is also not synonymous with fraud. The problem arises when a relevant intervention is misdescribed or concealed.

Detection and disclosure are different functions: a laboratory attempts to determine what was done, while a seller must communicate the relevant information correctly.

Treatment is not one category. Laser drilling creates a channel to access or alter the appearance of a particular inclusion; fracture filling introduces material into a surface-reaching fracture; HPHT processing can alter the color of some natural diamonds; irradiation and subsequent annealing can create or rearrange color centers; coating changes surface optical response. Combined treatments can make interpretation more complex.

The first question is not “Is treatment good or bad?” but What was physically changed, and is that change stable under expected use? Then come disclosure, care, and report eligibility. A fracture-filled or coated stone can require different service procedures and may fall outside the scope of a laboratory’s standard grading service.

Treatment identification must also be methodological. An unusual spectral center or a color observation is not the full process history. Laboratories combine microscopy, surface features, FTIR, UV-Vis-NIR, photoluminescence, and other relevant evidence. In some cases, the strongest permitted conclusion remains limited or indeterminate.

For a buyer or service professional, record four things: the treatment type, who disclosed or confirmed it, any care/repair restrictions, and how the treatment affects the applicable laboratory service. This prevents a common error: treating the present condition of a treated stone as though it were operationally identical to untreated material.

Escalate when basic screening or a microscopic feature does not resolve natural/laboratory-grown origin, growth method, or treatment status. For treatment questions, escalate before thermal, ultrasonic, or chemical service whenever stability and disclosure are uncertain. Fracture-filled and coated stones are particularly scope- and service-sensitive; do not assume standard report eligibility or service safety without checking the current controlling laboratory or service documentation.

Common Mistakes

“HPHT means synthetic.”
No. HPHT can describe a growth method or a treatment applied to natural or laboratory-grown material.

“Fracture filling repairs the fracture.”
It can make the fracture less visible optically; the crystalline fracture remains.

“One spectral line proves treatment.”
Not in complex cases. A body of evidence is required.

“Treatment equals fraud.”
No. Disclosure is the critical issue.

Remember

Do not ask only “Has it been treated?” Ask how, what changed, how it was established, how stable it is, and what the buyer must know for wear, service, and future sale.
